Colleen Naglee, MD, JD
I am a triple boarded physician currently working as a neuroanesthesiologist and neurointensivist. My commitment is to provide high quality care to patients.
I worked for many years as the co-director of Neurointensive Care Units. During my time in leadership my focus has been on quality pathways, harm reduction and early mobility. In addition, I worked with several groups on restraint reduction for a hospital.
In 2023 I graduated from Loyola Chicago School of Law with a JD. My intent in going to law school is to transition to patient safety and risk management work. Patient and family centered care are my passions.
In my career I have held a number of leadership positions through which I have tried to create just systems for all. For too long in medicine, a paternalistic and top down approach to care has favored patients with high socioeconomic status and medical literacy. Unfortunately, even our scoring systems in critical care are affected by race in ways that clinicians have not appreciated. We should foster systems that acknowledge differences but create equity for our most vulnerable. My work includes projects and presentations on ethical care, palliative care needs, early mobility and multidisciplinary rounds. The patients with serious, life threatening pressure injuries and difficult placements are rarely the ones with involved families and an excellent pre-morbid condition. Underpinning all of this work is a desire to look out for those whose voices are quieter but need our help even more.
